Just what “IF” that track was lightning fast AND Turcotte asked him for more speed OR some other horse challenge him ( a call to Fight). One thing for sure 2:24 would not have appeared on the tote board. More like 2:22 & small change IMO.
@AgaMbadi Don’t worry, none will never do it. Its safe until the end of time. Poor Slew, The Bid & many others tried but failed by lengths even at 4, 5, & 6 years of age. None had the muscules to do it except Secretariat.
@pocobull Your right my good man. “Hand Ridden” all the way. Never asked to go faster. Never broke a sweat & was not tired. Thats the words of Heywood Broun. Asked to go faster you say? Right, A 2:22 time frame easy. But Secretariat haters would never admit that though.
@James03300330 The .facts are no horse ever went in the 2:24 time frame on dirt. Proveout is the only one on dirt in a 2:25 time frame & that the 2nd fastest time ever on dirt (2:25 4/5). Easy Goer is next with 2:26 flat. Peintre Celebre time was 2:23 flat on “TURF”. There have been a few others faster than 2:24 flat but all on “TURF”. That is the “FACTS”.
@rscarbro100 Yep, 2:24 was just the time of this race. It was not indicative of how fast Secretariat could have gone if asked. He was hand ridden the whole race and never asked for more then he gave. I think he would have beaten the 2:22.4 that Hawkster ran at Santa Anita, on grass, if he’d been asked.

I saw this horse break 2:25.5.
He was an incredible animal; we won’t see his kind for a while.
Sec is and will always remain immortal. Even if a horse comes along one day and dashes his records, it will hardly matter. What that animal did for so many people who needed a reason to cheer placed him in the pantheon of sport’s greatest heroes. And unlike other athletes, he did it just for the hell of it. He loved to show off in his paddock for his fans in retirement and his life should inspire people to have reverence for all animals. They make our lives better.
@James03300330 I don’t know about 2:26 flat, but Secretariat still holds the world record for 1 1/2 miles on a dirt surface, so 2:24 has not been broken on dirt. Hawkster holds the world record for 1 1/2 on turf or any surface with a time of 2:22.4 run at Santa Anita in 1989.
Was at woodbine ex ridin for attfield the video showin his workout in this mist im in it after 35 years ridin it was my most memorable moment and i wasnt ridin him.Yet was along side of franklin aboard a grey horse ……….god knows if ….some folks called him the bid.
Actually thoroughbreds run about 7 furlongs a second so that’s 14 lengths ahead of everyone else.
@357MagnumBob One thing most don’t realize here is that Secretariat could have ran this Belmont much faster than the 2:24 flat. He was in crusie control the whole way. Even Turcotte told Laurin he could have went faster when asked why the fast pace. Its so easy to see that he could. No horse in history had ran a 1 1/2 mile as easy as Big Red. Woodie Heywood Braun said he didn’t even work up a lather & still was showing his ‘Class’.
cronometraje does not treat, if what I mean that time in that age, that record were not going to fall so that the horses become but fast each decade, secretariat is the best one so that it was advanced to his age, its times as soon as years were reached in the past decade thirty years later!
wow, “secretariat is frightening now, he is moving like a tremendous machine!” gives me the chills every time i watch it
Don’t forget SEC is the BM sire of Gone West, who is considered a sire of sires!
How can anyone hate God’s Perfect Creature?!
Dude, for a guy who seems to know so much, you might get your horse’s name right. It’s Alkaased, not Al Kaseed.
All the horses that broke Secretariat record at a 1 1/2 mile was at other tracks with little green grass on it. Most all the great horses have ran the Belmont in much less time. 10 lengths back & more. These Secretariat haters will always find a way to put him down. Sorry, won’t work but good try..
WAY TOO MUCH MUSIC- RUINS IT
He is amazing!!! He is the greatest racehorse I’ve ever seen!!!
wow no competition is an understatement.
…and remember also, Secretariat did all this as a three year old, when most horses reach their prime years later. The Japan Cup accepts three-year olds and up.
James033…
The Japan Cup is 2400m, 14m shorter than the Belmont stakes 2414 (12f). The horses at Japan05 averaged 16.89 m/s, so Al Kaseed’s time would translate into 2:22.9 for 12f, still beating Secretariat’s time. The Japan cup is also on grass, which makes a difference. Had Secretariat been in Japan’05 he may well have won. We will never know. Al Kaseed had an advantage in having a horse pushing him-the photo finish with Heart’s Cry had to be studied closely to determine the winner.
Looking at all the debate over race times, but I think they’re irrelevant. Every track is different in speed for a variety of reasons. Holding the track record is more relevant than who ran the fastest time, imho.
All I can say is I’ve been watching sports for over 50 years, and in that time, this is still the most awe-inspiring performance I’ve seen by any athlete in any sport.
yea just specify that his record is on dirt, do you kno of an accurate website that has full lists of distance records? would b appreciated
